چکیده

This research demonstrates that the motions of objects influence children’s attention to the parts of objects when learning nouns. Threeto five-year-old children viewed animated events involving bug-like creatures, each accompanied by one of two novel nouns. Nouns were differentiated by the creatures’ heads and legs. In addition, for some participants, the motions of the heads and legs distinguished nouns while paths of creatures varied randomly. For other participants, paths distinguished nouns while motions of the heads and legs varied randomly. We tested children by presenting events that varied on the relevant object properties and motions and asking if these events were still good examples of the nouns heard earlier. Participants were more likely to discover the association of nouns with creatures’ heads and legs when they moved in consistent manners than when moved in randomly-varying ways. These results suggest that motions influence children’s noun learning preferences.

Children Use Different Cues to Guide Noun and Verb Extensions.

Learning new words involves decoding both how a word fits the current situation and how it could be used in new situations. Three studies explore how two types of cues- sentence structure and the availability of multiple instances-- affect children's extensions of nouns and verbs. In each study, 2½-year-olds heard nouns, verbs or no new word while seeing the experimenter use a novel object to p...

Changes in Visual Object Recognition Precede the Shape Bias in Early Noun Learning

Two of the most formidable skills that characterize human beings are language and our prowess in visual object recognition. They may also be developmentally intertwined. Two experiments, a large sample cross-sectional study and a smaller sample 6-month longitudinal study of 18- to 24-month-olds, tested a hypothesized developmental link between changes in visual object representation and noun le...

The Shape of the Vocabulary Predicts the Shape of the Bias

Children acquire attentional biases that help them generalize novel words to novel objects. Researchers have proposed that these biases arise from regularities in the early noun vocabulary children learn and suggest that the specifics of the biases should be tied to the specifics of individual children's vocabularies. However, evidence supporting this proposal to date comes from studies of grou...

Increasing Flexibility in Children's Online Processing of Grammatical and Nonce Determiners in Fluent Speech.

Two experiments using online speech processing measures with 18- to 36-month-olds extended research by Gerken & McIntosh (1993) showing that young children's comprehension is disrupted when the grammatical determiner in a noun phrase is replaced with a nonce determiner (the car vs. po car). In Expt. 1, 18-month-olds were slower and less accurate to identify familiar nouns on nonce-article than ...

Object name learning provides on-the-job training for attention.

By the age of 3, children easily learn to name new objects, extending new names for unfamiliar objects by similarity in shape. Two experiments tested the proposal that experience in learning object names tunes children's attention to the properties relevant for naming--in the present case, to the property of shape--and thus facilitates the learning of more object names. In Experiment 1, a 9-wee...
